Gustavo Arenas
From the time he was 10 years old, Gustavo Arenas has had a “girlfriend” in his life: music. Because of her he studied very early on in his life and attended La Universidad del Valle, and thanks to music he currently works in recording productions.
Besides being an economist, Arenas is a pianist, and in 1973 he founded the orchestra Los Bunkers. Arenas began that project after leaving Pio XII, performing in various cities for a number of years. Later Arenas spent two years as a musical director for two television programs. At the same time he worked in the recording productions of Luna Verde, Ana y Jaime, Fausto, Gerónimo y Gali Galeano, among others, in Bogota, Colombia. Arenas crossed over to the United States to become involved in projects such Olga Tañon, Mili, and Jaci Velazquez. He also recorded material for Oscar de la Hoya and Enrique Iglesias.
Besides his musical formation at La Universidad del Valle, and for a span of 15 years, Arenas received classes from well-known professors León Simar and Cicerón Marmolejo, who taught Arenas the true meaning of jazz, and how to combine it with pop music, ballads and tropical music.
His trip to Miami was motivated by the need to look for new opportunities at a different level. Arenas got tired of doing jingles for commercials and records in Colombia. The record labels were not doing anything new, which is what Arenas was seeking. He came to the realization that Colombia was stuck in a musical movement and had nothing to offer the people.
Arenas considers Miami to be the place to be for both pop and modern music at an international level. “It is a territory full of opportunities for Latinos who enjoy an important expansion in the United States market, in part due to the flavour that we have. That is why we currently record in both English and Spanish.”
His work as producer includes Lenis, a Paraguayan singer who participated in the OTI in Mexico, and Erika, a Panamanian artist. Although Arenas has worked in the record productions of many artists, he too is a songwriter. He writes music, with the help of his lyricist friends.
Although he has lived in the US for many years, Arenas has never stopped eating lunch at noon, nor remembering or missing Cali, especially the people. He loves his city and says that it is spectacular, and that the women are divine everywhere you go. Arenas misses the mountains of his native land the most.
