Mimezine started in the end of 1996 when drummer Baz Mattie and bass-player Marc Baronner got together to experiment with electronic music. Over the years both musicians
gained a lot of experience by touring and recording with popular dutch bands like Shine,
La Lupa, Toy Factory and recently Junkie XL.
After a period of making instrumental tracks, vocalist Vera van der Poel joined Mimezine to
give the group a more personal and recognisable character.
“They approached me after I did a show at a festival in Utrecht,” Vera recalls. “When I heard
their rough material I was really excited about it, so the next day we met again… in the studio!”
The sound of Mimezine is best described as a crossover between modern dance music like Triphop and Drum & Bass and poptune melodies.
“We want to combine the energetic and innovative sound of dance music with the structure of ‘traditional’ popsong. It’s the combination of a good groove, special sounds and a good story that we’re looking for.”
Mimezine is constantly working on new material in their own demo-studio at Marc’s place. Their demo received very good reviews and ended up in the Top 3 of the “Best demo of the year” charts in dutch music magainzes like Music Maker and Fret.
The band did their first live show on national radio and was a finalist in a dutch band competition called “De Grote Prijs van Nederland”, where the public choose Mimezine
as their favourite live dance-act.
