With her heartfelt vocals and inspired songwriting, Patty Cabrera brings her unique perspective on life and love to pop music. Her debut Curb Records album, Always and Forever, effortlessly blends Latin rhythm-infused dance tracks, ballads and pop/rock songs into a bold, powerful work that reflects Patty’s personal world view and deep-seed Christian faith.
Patty has already captured the attention of the media, including People magazine where she was featured as one of the year’s “50 Most Beautiful People in the World.” But ironically, when she was young. Patty describes herself as a tomboy. Born in Riverside, California, Patty is one of five children of a Cuban father and a Puerto Rican mother. Her interest in performing was apparent at an early age.
“To this day, my mother still tells of how, before I took my first full steps, I pulled myself up against the record player console and swayed to Sugar, Sugar by the Archies,” Patty recalls.
However, at family sing-alongs and gatherings, Patty left the vocal spotlight to her siblings. She credits her brother with nurturing her understanding and love of a wide variety of music.
“My brother would sit me down in front of the stereo, play a song and teach me how to decipher the different instruments and studio effects,” Patty comments. “Though I grew up with a strong sense of my Latin heritage, my musical tastes revolved more around the rock and roll my brother listened to, and the pop and R&B music I personally was drawn to. I listened to everything from James Taylor to Kool and the Gang to Michael Jackson.
Patty joined her high school choir but her decision to join the choir was made more because of the three day on–tour trips, than the desire to grow musically. Subsequently, Patty and a few fellow students formed a Christian Pop band, appearing at school assemblies, church functions and social gatherings.
“Once we hit college, though, we went our separate ways and did only a handful of performances, Patty remembers. At that point, Patty embarked on a musical and spiritual journey that resolved itself in the summer of 1994.
“I had been asking myself a lot of questions about life, spirituality, and where music and I fit it, Patty says. She ultimately accepted an invitation to perform in the 19950 Billy Graham Latin International Crusade in Puerto Rico. She teamed with her Always and Forever producer, Bob Parr, to write the crusade’s theme song, Take It Away. Her experiences on the crusade resulted in Always and Forever, an album of spiritual and emotional power.
Patty and Parr (who has worked with Wynona, Brian Setzer and Barry White, among others) formed a fruitful songwriting collaboration and wrote a number of cuts on Always and Forever including Home (Wherever Your Heart Is), Free Me and Take It Away. Patty also recorded I Hear Love, written by Jon Secada. Members of the Miami Sound Machine Rhythm section and Michael Jackson’s horn section back her on the album.
Initially when she made the album, Patty wanted to explore subjects close to her heart. “I wrote about the things I’m passionate about – God, family and romance,” she says. “My faith in God is the foundation of my life. My music celebrates life – accepting the reality of pain and the reality of hope.”
