The Scene
The Scene
In January of 1989 THE SCENE, a Dutch rock band having gone through the usual struggle on releasing several independent singles, not getting enough local radio station attention, signing up with Benelux’s Dureco and released their Rij Rij Rij (Ride Ride Ride) album. The album gets them limited attention in Holland but becomes a major hit with the Belgian media. The press as well as the Belgian rockstation "Studio Brussel" reacts enthusiastically. Their Belgian summer tour resulted in a fast growing audience and their single, Rauw Hees Teder (Raw Horse Tender) turned out to be their first genuine radio hit.

Word gets around and before you know it, THE SCENE is a happening band. In Autumn of 1990 the CD Blauw (Blue) was released on PolyGram – got great reviews, lots of airplay with three hits in Belgium and two in Holland. A Dutch rock band breaking via Belgium (there home territory) has never happened in Dutch Rock History. By this time they were selling out in the bigger venues in Belgium and the clubs in Holland. They control the polls, are seen on the screen every week and are labeled as "having a strong Euro cross-over potential". In 1991 they proudly accepted the prestigious Edison (Dutch equivalent to the Grammys) for Best Dutch Rockalbum. Belgium beat this with the biggest prize ever, fulfilling their dream by inviting them to play the famous Torhout/Werchter Festival where hardly ever a Dutch or Belgian band has ever played. A renowned journalist writes, "It’s all because their music and lyrics fint in a way, never achieved by a lowland act before. Their magic quality, necessary for a strong live act, makes that you can put them on anywhere."

1992 was an exciting year for THE SCENE. For the first time ever, a Dutch band singing in their local language was invited to perform at the New Music Seminar. While in New York, the band does showcases and tries out some English lyrics and they get an tremendous response from the audience. It proved that the band is of international standing. In the same year, their album Open is recorded and released. Again, throughout Benelux the results are incredible. Great press, two hits and the album enters the Dutch Album Top 100 at #40 while in Belgium it reaches #10. For the second time, THE SCENE is awarded with an Edison for "Best Rock Album". During this period the productivity of frontman, The Lau, is unending. In spite of heavy schedules, promotional activities and gigs, he and the band write enough material for yet another jewel which sees light in 1993. The press defines this album as "a monument in their career." Avenue de la Scene is yet another chart success.

Early in 1994 The Lau says this of his band, "A real rock band is a happy drinker – opens solo and somber, waiting for what will come, thinking of nothing, two hands supporting the head. Then the audience arrives…It is the answer to the question often asked: Why are you acting better live than in a recording studio? In the studio we are a band, on stage we are THE SCENE." This marks the beginning of a number of recording sessions, live appearances and the production of a 75-minute live video. Both the album and the video contain their previous hits and best-known songs. Together with an impressive photo book by photographer, Paul Tolenaar, this concludes quite a period for this intriguing band. To avoid routine, The Lau and his band (Emilie Blom – bass & vocals, Otto Cooymans – piano & organ, Joroen Booy – drums and Eus van Someren – guitar) choose a new approach for their latest album Arena. It took more than a year to record this album. Most of the tracks were put on tape in the rehearsal rooms – something never before done by the band. Starting point of the production was to produce a pop-album with a diversity of songs.

Since 1990 THE SCENE has had the same lineup but remains fresh and enthusiastic. This is due to the five different personalities making up the group. Five artists with five music preferences – let’s just say there’s A LOT of fun in the band. In rock music, many think that humor is not cool, THE SCENE proves otherwise.
